About the Artist:

I used to make wire rings out of brightly colored telephone wire when I was six years old. All my friends did it. Now it seems I'm the only one who remembers. Maybe it was all a dream.

For the time being I live in Minnesota, just south of the Twin Cities, with a bevy of dogs, cats, llamas, sheep, chickens, turtles, etc., etc. I have a Master of Fine Arts degree and have also studied music and horticulture. I keep a large garden and occasionally write for Northern Gardener magazine.

Techniques and Reading Recommendations

I do all my wirework myself by hand -- no jigs, no gizmos, no elves. I started by sheer experimentation: trial and error. Then I had a brain storm --- Hey! Buy a book! So I did. And then another. And another. Many were crap. Many were fantastic. Here are my favorites:

All Wired Up by Mark Lareau. The place to start when beginning your journey with wire.

Bead on a Wire by Sharilyn Miller. Step two on your journey.

Contemporary Bead and Wire Jewelry by Nathalie Mornu and Suzanne J.E. Tourtillott. Gorgeous designs, with slightly more advanced techniques.

Eni Oken isn't a book (although that is her earring design on the cover above), but she does offer an encyclopedia of expertise on her web site, including downloadable tutorials with precise, step-by-step instructions on how to make some of her absolutely breathtaking designs.
