Caring for your jewelry

Many of the gemstones in my jewelry can be damaged by harsh chemical cleaning agents. Some tips for keeping your jewelry clean:

Air oxidizes. The best way to keep your sterling shiny is to not let it tarnish in the first place. Store your jewelry in the smallest zipper-seal bag that will fit and keep that bag in a sealed, air-tight container. They aren't pretty, but plastic food storage containers like Tupperware work great. Hide them in your drawers. Hide them in your closet. But don't forget they're there!

Chemicals oxidize too. Apply makeup, perfume, hairspray, bug repellent, sunscreen, superhero plasma gel, etc. before you put on your jewelry then wash your hands. When you remove your jewelry, wipe off any residue with a soft cloth.

Use a soft cloth to wipe off tarnish and smudges. A treated cloth for sterling silver and copper works great, but try to avoid rubbing the gemstone and glass components with the chemical cloth.

DO NOT:

Use sonic cleaners. They can destroy some minerals.

Use chemical soaks or sprays including household cleaners and metal polish.
